Working Alone Essay - 1040 Words
Working Alone: A Case For the Solitary Scientist THESIS: While useful, the formal group construct should not be considered the only acceptable approach in which scientists work: our most celebrated scientists have all worked alone while contributing much to their respective fields. SECTION II. IMPORTANT TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITIONS: Big Science: Large groups of scientists with differing ideas or areas of expertise working collaboratively on a collective research project. Epistemic System: A social system that houses a variety of procedures, institutions, and patterns of interpersonal influence that affect the epistemic outcomes of members (McCain 239). Those institutions with formally defined procedures and mission statements areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The greatest is that individuality is removed as a group -think mentality is instituted. In every organization, there are stronger personalities who claim to speak for the team; those who are less charismatic but gifted often see their ideas blocked or co-opted into the work of another. Additionally, as many epistemic systems feel pressured to show results, the significant work of an individual may not be included in the mission and some work may be left behind. B. Strongest Reasons in Support of My Thesis: Darwin, Einstein, Galileo, and Newton are some of the most recognized names in science. Within their respective fields, their work was not the only groundbreaking at the time it was completed, but it continues to influence the work of scientists today. However, these men elected to work outside of the formal group construct, yet, their work did not suffer. While these men may have resolved to work sans partenaires for any number of reasons, the outcome was unaltered- they arrived at the same conclusions. In other words, they did not require the assistance or the socialization of a group. We do know that they benefitted from the use of testimony, as Galileo worked to further the heliocentric theories of Copernicus. Seismic Activity Essay Example For Students
Seismic Activity Essay California has 200 or more faults capable of producing large earthquakes. Some of the faults are hidden and some visible at the surface. The biggest concentration of faults are in the San Adreas fault zone and the San Jacinto fault zone. Because of Californias large amount of Fault lines the United States Geological Survey, the California division of mines and Geology, the California Institute and other agencies have developed the Southern California Earthquake Center and TriNet Seismic network. This organization monitors the earthquake activity. The seismographs are linked to a computer using a mix of GPS and Landlines . The seismography records are sent to a computer within a few minutes. The information is a available to the public via the Internet. Data at this site is saved to a catalog that are searchable by various parameters. After creating the project using ArcView GIS or Arc View 3D analyst, the next step was to determine the projects objective and scope. Once the data was obtained and converted, maps could be created and analysis performed. The projects objective was to ascertain whether there was a pattern to the earthquakes in Southern California. The area chosen stretches approximately 67 miles by 50 miles. The time frames was 6 months. The SCEC Data center Earthquake and Hypocenter and Phase database was queried for data. Available search parameters were data about magnitudes, start and end date, minimum and maximum depths and Longitude and Latitude. A second site from Cal Tech and the USGS was also used. Time measurements from the SCEC site were converted to Pacific standard time for use with Cal Tech/USGS data. Latittude and longitude measurement in degrees from Cal Tech site were converted to decimal degrees. The highway and street data (from arcview) were used. The highways around the area was selected. Data from the internet was used to determine where the faults were located. Using the line tool, as each line was drawn the name of the fault was added to the table. Once the map was completed, a 3d theme could be created. The 3d theme was created to show the depth of the faults (z axis). In order to make a TIN theme the themes from the 1st view was pasted into the 2nd view. A breakline theme was created parallel to and on each side of an observed pattern of earthquakes perpendicular to the San Jacinto fault. Using the earthquake point theme and breakline theme, an inverse distance weighting contour was created. The contour theme was used to create the TIN theme. The addition of this TIN caused the scene to rotate slowly and then the patterns became evident. There appears to be a pattern of quakes parallel to the San Jose and Cucamunga faults and perpendicular to the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults. This article was a excellent source to show the capabilities of Arc View GiS and Arc View 3D analyst. It also taught me a lot about all the wonderful uses and purposes for GIS. GIS will be used a lot more for stuff like vo lcanoes and earthquakes. Bibliography:

Following the tsunami, Garuda and Japan Airlines (JAL) flight close Japan-Indonesia and the impact on the decline in Japanese tourist arrivals to Bali. Bali Tourism Office data also showed the number of Japanese tourists visiting Bali dropped dramatically over the past four years from 354,817 people in 2008 to 183,284 people in 2011. However, with the reopening of the Garuda Indonesia flight routes to Denpasar-Haneda can increase the number of Japanese tourist arrivals in 2012, as many as 191,836. While Australia remains the first arrivals to Bali and is increasing from year to year. This is because Bali is a tourist area featured for the citizens of Australia, even the majority considers that Bali is a second home for the citizens of Australia. Followed by China, South Korea, and Malays ia, are the number of arrivals increasing every year, there are UK, Taiwan, and France which despite its position up and down, but still occupy the top 10 positions. There is also Singapore that was not in the top 10, but increase drastically in 2010 and continued to increase until 2012. For Germany and Netherland, although had entered the top position, but if we look at the table, there was a decrease in the number of arrivals, even get out of the top 10 positions. so, I prefer the USA to enter the list of top 10 countries who come to Bali, because even though his position was replaced by up and down the country, but the number of his arrival is likely to increase from year to year, compared with Germany and Netherland. American travelers accounted for most number of tourist visits in part thanks to booming film Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts. So, can I conclude that the top 10 countries are a frequent visitor to Bali is as follows. This can be caused by the increasing number of flights and affordable package, also promo tours offered by travel agents are more affordable. From the chart above, we can see decline in 2012. Actually this is because the current data in December of 2012 could still change. BPS Bali still do not have accurate data for the month, so it seems there is a decrease of the level of domestic tourists visiting Bali. D.
